‘A Russian Christmas’ with Daria Kulesh & Marina Osman

Daria’s collaboration with the extraordinary pianist Marina Osman (originally from Belarus) started with a set of nostalgic Russian songs, mostly from classic Soviet-era films, combined with Russian folk favourites. Expect plenty of authentic Russian flavour, superb musicianship and heaps of heartfelt, infectious energy.

Peter Knight and John Spiers

In the summer of 2016, the organisers of FolkEast Festival had the grand idea of pairing  Peter and melodeon player extraordinaire, John Spiers (ex-Bellowhead) for a special ‘one off’ concert. It ended up being a genuine festival highlight, with no space to be found in the Marquee and people standing five deep in pouring rain ending with a standing ovation. Since that moment they’ve continued this very successful partnership to great acclaim.

Virginia Kettle

Sunday 15th March

Andreas Tophoj and Rune Barslund

Two leading Danish traditional musicians of their generation, specialising in fiddle and accordion but also encompassing viola, whistle and vocals. Marrying together the sound from their roots in the Jutland peninsula with Irish, Finish and North American influences, they put their own twist on the Danish tradition while looking out across the world.

Racheal McShane and the Cartographers

Rachael is a singer, cellist, fiddle and viola player based in the North East of England. Best known as an original member of folk big band BellowheadRachael is now reworking traditional songs with a new band, The Cartographers, featuring guitarist Matthew Ord (Assembly Lane) and melodeon player Julian Sutton (Kathryn Tickell, Sting).

Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage

Huddled round a single microphone, singing intimate duets with just mountain dulcimer, dobro and guitar, Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage are an acoustic duo that sound classically timeless, yet their music is unique. The duo have toured the UK, North America and mainland Europe, enrapturing audiences at shows and on festival stages with the sparkling beauty of their acoustic style.

Gnoss

Gnoss are a dynamic Scottish four-piece of fiddle, flute, guitar and percussion, who tackle energetic tune sets and driving folk songs with a ‘maturity of ability many of a greater age will envy’ (The Living Tradition). Graham Rorie, Aidan Moodie, Connor Sinclair and Craig Baxter have been tipped as ‘ones to watch’ by Songlines magazine for their lively, engaging and honest performances.

Merry Hell

Join us at Froize in June to welcome the return of our favourite Northerners, Merry Hell. Merry Hell is an eight-piece folk-rock band with a history, a pedigree and a bright future. Founded on the ever evolving Folk tradition, their art is energy and their hope is unity. Their pleasure is to please, the audience is the acid test and they let the music speak for itself. Come along and admire the energy of the band’s live performance … you won’t regret it!

Flook

Join us at Froize in June to welcome the amazing Anglo Irish quartet Flook. 

Flook possess a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination. Their album ‘Ancora’ was nominated as Best Album in BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2019 and they were nominated as Best Folk Group in Ireland’s RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards 2019.

Glymjack

Led by singer-songwriter Greg McDonald, Glymjack are a 6 piece folk band featuring fiddle virtuoso Gemma Gayner and Radio 2 Young Folk Award nominee Saul Bailey. They deliver a high energy, harmony-rich set of hard-hitting originals, English folk songs and fiddle tunes.

Leana and Hartwin

Join us at Folk at the Froize on Sunday 30th August 2020 for a magical evening with Leana and Hartwin who are on tour from Estonia. Leana Vapper-Dhoore is a singer who also plays bagpipes and flutes. Hartwin Dhoore plays the diatonic accordion and is known for his contemporary instrumental compositions. Shaped into a fragile and intimate universe their music takes you to the place where it was born; Saaremaa.

Harry Bird and Hannah Rarity

Join us at Folk at the Froize on Sunday 20th September 2020 for a magical double header with Scottish singer Hannah Rarity (Winner of BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2018) and our favourite quirky trio, Harry Bird (previously know as The Rubber Wellies).

Edgelarks

Join us at Folk at the Froize on Sunday 25th October 2020 to welcome Edgelarks. Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin are one of the most captivating and innovative acoustic duos in the UK, winners of ‘Best Duo’ at the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. A class act built on Henry’s much extolled musicianship, Martin’s highly original songwriting and her deep, soulful voice.

Alden Patterson and Dashwood

Join us at Folk at the Froize on Sunday 22nd November 2020 for a magical evening rich in vocal harmonies, fiddle, dobro & guitar. With beautifully written original songs and melodies, their music takes influence from folk traditions, with uplifting instrumentals and self-penned songs depicting tales of young travellers, sleepy seas and their affection for home

Honey & The Bear at Christmas

Join us at Folk at the Froize on Sunday 20th December 2020 when our very own Jon & Lucy return to the Froize for a Christmas special, rounding off the year with a wonderfully heart warming evening of festive joy, musical cheer and friendship. With banjo, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, double bass and percussion, Honey & The Bear weave a rich and diverse live performance.

With only 12 events per year, our performance spots are very limited, but we always appreciate an email from interested performers.
